You don’t have to live in a cottage to make your home feel like one. It is, in fact, entirely possible to transform your existing modern space into a home that feels like a cottage.
About a year ago, The Epoch Times shared a glimpse into our home and how I had begun to slowly, tenderly transform a modern space into something softer. More soulful. A place where life could unfold gently, and where each corner whispered stories of comfort, warmth, and a simpler way of being.

It wasn’t a makeover. It was a love story. A slow layering of timeworn pieces, quiet details, and everyday rituals that began to shift the rhythm of our days. Even now, I’m still adding, still moving things around, letting the house become what it wants to be. And I love it more with each passing season.
Fortunately, you don’t need a cottage home in the countryside to live this way. You just need a little intention and a desire to fall in love with your home, slowly.
Here are a few of the tender, simple touches that helped infuse our modern home with cottage charm.

1. wallpaper with a whisper of the past

There’s something magical and delightfully old-fashioned about wallpaper, the way it softens a room and wraps it in cottage charm. We chose delicate florals and vintage patterns, the kind that feel like they belong in an old novel. It tells a quiet story before you even speak.
2. collected treasures with meaning
We enjoy filling our shelves with small things that make our hearts skip a beat. Treasures like a chipped teacup from a flea market, dried flowers in a glass bottle, an old book with someone else’s handwriting in the margins. These objects aren’t just pretty; they carry memory. They slow you down, in the best way.

3. antique furniture that holds time

There’s romance in old furniture. The worn edges, the creak of a drawer, the feeling that it has lived other lives. We’ve brought in a few beloved pieces: a wooden table with scratches that tell a story, a floral armchair perfect for curling up with a book, and a glass-front cabinet that catches the morning light.
4. layered fabrics that invite you in
Soft linen curtains that sway in the breeze, faded quilts tossed over the arm of a chair, delicate lace draped over a bedside table. These textures create a sense of warmth and care. You don’t need much, just pieces that feel good in your hands.

At its heart, cottage charm isn’t about décor. It’s about feeling. The soft light in the morning, the scent of herbs on your hands, the comfort of a well-loved chair. It’s a home that holds you gently and says, “stay awhile.”
Whether you’re in the city or the countryside, whether your walls are old stone or clean white drywall, you can still create a space that feels like a cottage. Begin slowly. Begin with what you love. And let your home become a reflection of the life you want to live: simple, slow, and filled with love.
